The Milwaukee Center’s Founders Return: A Book Talk by Dr. David Shapiro and Dr. Jane Hawes; Monday, April 29, at 7:00pm; Gesar of Ling: A Bardic Tale.

Our Center began as a dharma study group forty years ago in their living room. We were guided by their inspiration and practice example for many years. In addition to their careers in medicine as practicing MDs they became Tibetan translators. Jane Hawes was part of the translation team in Robin Korman’s translation of the Epic of Gesar of Ling, published in 2012.  David wrote the introduction to that work.

Now David and Jane have collaborated on a retelling of that epic tale of Tibetan culture and lore in a contemporized style of the original bardic voice, giving full rein to this wondrous tale. This is the national epic myth that, over the centuries, has guided the understanding of the Tibetan culture and its people. Embodying all the qualities of enlightened activity, and marked by compassion, fearlessness, and insight, the story itself has the power to changes one's mind about what one might think is real, what is true, and how to act in this very world realm.

The Epic of Gesar of Ling is a key element of Shambhala culture. David and Jane are the reason the Milwaukee Shambhala Center exists today.

Please join us Monday, April 29 to welcome them home to the Shambhala Center and to learn all about their exciting new collaboration.
