“War and peace start in the human heart. Whether that heart is open or whether that heart closes has global implications.”  -- Pema Chödrön

Our world feels more adversarial and violent than ever, and we intuitively know that a deep shift toward peace is needed if humanity is to survive. But where do we start?

Sages, meditation masters, and great teachers say that by working with our own challenging emotions and mental states, we increase our ability to bring healing and compassion to a troubled world. This 3-day retreat offers an opportunity to increase our capacity to be peace through shamatha (literally “peaceful abiding”) and compassion practice. We’ll listen to talks from Buddhist nun Pema Chödrön, practice meditation together, and study teachings in a supportive environment.

Practice for Peace is open to everyone, at every experience level. Instruction will be provided in the morning for new meditators. While it is recommended that participants attend the full retreat, you may also attend one or two days, or drop into sessions as your schedule allows. However, beginning meditation instruction will be provided at 9 am each morning.

Support peace and this retreat, but can’t attend? Consider a year-end donation to the Milwaukee Shambhala Meditation Center. Your tax-deductible donation makes it possible for us to offer programming like this so anyone can learn meditation and help our world become more sane and kind ($20/ day suggested).
